What is RTLS?

A Real time locating system is used to automatically identify and track the location of objects or people in real time, usually within a building or other contained area. Wireless RTLS tags are attached to objects or worn by people, and in most RTLS, fixed reference points receive wireless signals from tags to determine their location.

Examples of real-time locating systems include tracking automobiles through an assembly line, locating pallets of merchandise in a warehouse, or finding medical equipment in a hospital.

The physical layer of RTLS technology is usually some form of radio frequency (RF) communication. Tags and fixed reference points can be transmitters, receivers, or both, resulting in numerous possible technology combinations.

RTLS are a form of local positioning system, and do not usually refer to GPS or to mobile phone tracking. Location information usually does not include speed, direction, or spatial orientation, however it is possible to link GPS to RTLS.

Radio Frequency IDentification has been around since the 1940s when Russian espionage used it to passively track objects. These passive RFID tags continue to be used to this day, easy to attach and dispose of, there is now a huge variety of tags to choose from.
Active RFID offers extensive capabilities in asset and people tracking. This requires small battery-powered tags to broadcast their signal. They provide a much wider reach than passive tags. In short, passive tags must wait for external energy to power them while active RFID is able to broadcast on its own. Furthermore, passive RFID is not designed to offer real-time information. It is designed to record movement and only functions when brought in close proximity to a reader. For example, passive RFID employee access cards typically function at some 125 khz, having a read range of 1-10cm.

Managers in a warehouse or a health care system would find immense benefit in active data. The same for people tracking, such as that used in our patient safety solutions, and in emergency evacuations, responsible staff will want to know where a patient/employee/visitor is actively located, not where they passed through thirty minutes earlier. Active RFID and Bluetooth Low Energy, offer much greater read ranges up to 70m, readings can then be integrated into a mobile app or leveraged to pass data onto a server and provide the required information.
There are several levels to active RFID as well. Ultra-Wideband, ZigBee, and Bluetooth all use similar practices and frequencies. Still, Bluetooth is generally viewed as different from other active solutions as it uses different technology and offers different results
When used in RTLS, BLE utilizes low energy tags, which are small devices that work by sending out a signal that can be picked up by other Bluetooth devices and indicate distance between a tag and a reader. Due to the widespread adaptation of the Bluetooth standard, BLE solutions have some advantages over RFID in their ability to integrate into other systems and everyday mobile devices. All modern day smart phones are already equipped with the technology. The first major difference between BLE and RFID RTLS therefore becomes obvious:
As smartphones and devices can be used as part of the real time location system, Bluetooth greatly simplifies every step of the process.
The RTLS market is filled with different kinds of standards and each has its own unique hardware. While the premise behind these real time location systems are almost the same, the hardware is differs greatly.
Both BLE and Active RFID systems use tags to send out a signal to readers every few seconds. These signals can be analysed to determine the (more or less) exact location of the tags. Both systems also operate at room level, meaning they are optimal for zonal tracking. However, while passive RFID tags which do not require a battery are low cost, active RFID tags and readers tend to be more expensive.
The level of accuracy a real time location system provides is generally related directly to the technology chosen. Both BLE and Active RFID RTLS are ideal for zonal or room-level tracking. This means they can tell a manager “this asset is in this room.”
More precise solutions can tell a manger on which shelf or in which corner an asset is located, by triangulation, however for many scenarios, room-level tracking is sufficient.
Hardware and the data transmitted from a tag to a reader needs to work with connected software.

Users can search for specific tags or assets, group assets by type, run diagnostics, generate reports, or analyse data. In some scenarios, users can also create Geo fences (Zones) to set up triggers, actions that should occur when a specific parameter is met.

  • Fleet Management systems, live positioning and tracking of vehicles, fuel costs, maintenance information
  • Transportation systems use tracking devices to know the whereabouts of their company’s vehicles and or products, and are able to inform customers of where their goods are in the delivery process.
Cons
  • Cost. Most GPS units require batteries as a power source, and a SIM card to send and receive data. If 24/7 locating is required, there are high costs incurred in battery usage and data.
  • Some tracking device accuracy can be affected by mountains, rivers and other obstructions, thus, some coordinates it may give could be misleading.
  • Does not work accurately indoors
  • Tracking Devices relying on cellular phones will not work when the phone has no signal.
  • Can be high security risk, Hackers can hack some tracking devices.
  • Privacy issues for staff
